What is Accessibility? It's where better Design begins.

The intentional practice of designing and developing the digital and physical world for Everyone, Everywhere.

Real stories of how designing for one community changed everything for everyone.

The Curb Cut

Designed for wheelchair users. Used by everyone.

The curb cut movement began in Berkeley in the early 1970s, when disability advocates took to the streets with sledgehammers to create their own. When the ADA mandated them nationwide in 1990, they became standard infrastructure. Today they're used by parents with strollers, travelers, cyclists, and others without a second thought. What wheelchair users needed to cross a street is now the curb that millions depend on.

Closed Captions

Built for Deaf viewers. Now a global standard.

In 2011, the National Association of the Deaf sued Netflix for failing to caption its streaming content. Netflix settled in 2012 and committed to caption everything, building infrastructure that became the backbone for multi-language support across hundreds of markets. Today, millions of hearing viewers watch with captions on in noisy spaces, public transit, and open offices. What Deaf viewers fought for, millions now turn on in noisy offices, busy cafés, and crowded commutes.

The Nike FlyEase

Designed for a teenager with cerebral palsy. Became a cultural phenomenon.

Matthew Walzer wrote to Nike in 2012 at 16 because he couldn't tie his own shoes. Nike's response was the FlyEase, launched in 2015, a hands-free entry system that let him put on sneakers independently. It was adopted almost immediately by moms managing kids, older adults, and anyone who valued slipping in and out of a shoe quickly. What one teenager needed, the world eventually wanted.

Voice-to-Text

Born from Deaf communication. Now how millions send messages.

In 1964, Robert Weitbrecht invented the TTY, giving Deaf people a way to communicate over phone lines for the first time. That infrastructure evolved into SMS, then text messaging, then the voice-to-text transcription built into every phone and app today. Now everyone uses it while driving, cooking, or keeping their hands free. A communication lifeline for one community became a daily habit for billions.

The Opportunity and the Imperative

The internet was built for everyone. The data shows it's failing a billion people.

Why It Matters

With 1.3 billion people living with disabilities and $13 trillion in collective spending power, inaccessible digital experiences don't just exclude people. They cost organizations customers, revenue, and competitive ground. Yet for many organizations, the barrier to fixing this has been cost and complexity.
